Big Shoulders is a superfamily of condensed American Gothic variable fonts created for the Chicago Design System, drawing design inspiration from Chicago's histories in railway transport, public political action, and dance. The project comprises three related font families—Big Shoulders, Big Shoulders Stencil, and Big Shoulders Inline—built using Python-based tools including fontmake and gftools. The fonts are distributed through Google Fonts, Adobe Creative Cloud, and xotype.co, and support extensive language coverage through comprehensive diacritical marks and OpenType features like ligatures and small caps.
