GUN is an open-source cybersecurity protocol for syncing decentralized graph data, created by Mark Nadal in 2014. Built as a lightweight graph synchronization engine in approximately 9KB gzipped, GUN enables developers to construct community-run and encrypted applications with real-time peer-to-peer state synchronization, local-first offline capabilities, and end-to-end encryption. The ecosystem includes tools and libraries for multiple frameworks and platforms—including React, React Native, Angular, Electron, Vue, and Svelte—along with modules covering CRDT conflict resolution, cryptographic security, mesh networking, and distributed systems correctness. Supported by organizations including Mozilla, Unstoppable Domains, and Mask.io, GUN has been deployed in production by the Internet Archive and hundreds of other applications, handling terabytes of daily peer-to-peer traffic.
